Luke Reece

Who is Luke?

In a failed attempt to escape Presto Luke left his hometown of Mississauga under the guise of becoming a Toronto-based artist. He strives to share authentic and engaging stories with audiences through his work as a producer, playwright, poet and educator. Along with being the Co-Creator of Dark Nights, he is the Producer for Canada’s leading culturally specific theatre company, Obsidian Theatre. He continually seeks opportunities to empower and support young-in-craft artists with his collective Little Black Afro Theatre, creating spaces for artists to develop work with and for the communities they come from. After becoming the Toronto Poetry Slam (TPS) Grand Champion in 2017, Luke went on to captain the 2017 TPS team that became national champions at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word. He most recently competed in Vancouver in April 2018 at the Canadian Individual Poetry Slam and placed 2nd in the country.

Aseja Deva

Hamilton Youth Poets

"As our July feature, Luke gave us a brilliant performance and workshop! He carries with him an amazing energy - such a bright and kind light that radiates positivity.”

Neil Ekels

Principal, McBride Ave. Public School

"Luke Reece  has an amazing ability to connect with young people. He worked with our Grade six students to support them telling their story. Luke’s passion for spoken word encourages students to open up and confidently share their ideas."

David Silverberg

Toronto Poetry Project

"There are few poets who can combine humour, empathy, potent messages and strong stagecraft but Luke Reece makes it look easy. His set at Toronto Poetry Slam was a 2018 highlight for me, and I can't wait to see what else this talented poet delivers to his fans in the coming years."

Estelle Anderson

Meadowvale Secondary School

"Our school loves Luke Reece and can't wait for him to return! Luke came into our school and single-handedly prepared our senior students to perform their poetry in our school's first spoken word showcase. After insightful consultation, he designed and facilitated a creative process that included a spoken word workshop, small group coaching and a successful group performance which he MC'd and performed in. As much as he's a talented and charismatic performer, he's also a natural teacher whose open-hearted acumen won our students over from day one.  It was somewhat of a miracle that Luke lead this diverse group of performance-shy teenagers to read their own poetry with confidence in front of their peers, parents and teachers. Our kids loved Luke. And even though they were in awe of him and had never performed their very personal poems before, Luke put them as ease, even as he challenged them to level up."
